Sunday Showcase – Fun Summer Nights (for Free!) | Vancouver Family Photographer
Summer is the time to really take advantage of some down time and explore the area in which you live. Did you know there are a wide variety of places to go and things to see in the Vancouver area – and all for free?!? Here are some amazing places (some you may have never even thought to visit before). Have an early dinner, gather up the kids and spend some summer nights exploring your own backyard.
Head over to the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre to do some star-gazing. Every Friday and Saturday night during the summer, the centre offers public viewings of the night sky at its observatory. The half-metre Cassegrain telescope allows guests to have an up-close look at the sky in ways that can’t be achieved by just looking up. Don’t forget to visit the crab sculpture at the front of the building – it’s one of the most photographed sites in Vancouver.
Take the Aquabus over to Granville Island to walk around the town and discover its bustling Public Market. Filled with almost every food item one can imagine, spend some time meandering through the stalls until you make your final dinner (or snack) selections. Kids can marvel at the variety of street musicians or stroll through the island’s own special Kids Market. Spend an evening (or entire day) at Granville and you’ll be happy you did.
If food is your thing, another great market to visit is the Richmond Night Market. Specializing in Chinese delicacies, this market features an array of foods, trinkets and even entertainment. The best part – kids get in for free (adult admission is $2.25). All of the choices can be a bit overwhelming, so it’s best to go with no set-plan in place and just let your senses guide you along.
You still have a few more chances to catch a free movie in Stanley Park. Every Tuesday night through September 2, a different family-friendly movie will be screened. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic and sit back and enjoy the show! Upcoming movies include The Karate Kid, Ghost and The Princess Bride. A full schedule can be found here.
